In the late-1990s, the Miami Jackson High School, an economically-depressed inner-city school, fails to garner any attention for their extracurricular programs. When teacher Mario Martinez (John Leguizamo) steps up to coach the school chess team, the group of struggling teens begins to experience significant success, qualifying for the United States National Chess Championship in 1998.
