Synopsis by Mark Deming
Since 1951, Le Crazy Horse de Paris has been Europe's most-famous and elegant strip club, described by the owners as "the best nude dancing show in the world." Unlike most nightspots devoted to presenting female flesh, Le Crazy Horse prides itself on a show featuring inventive choreography and a stylish, sophisticated presentation, and is billed as a place for couples to enjoy an evening's entertainment. Celebrated filmmaker Frederick Wiseman, who has previously made documentaries about the Paris Opera Ballet and the Comedie Francaise, offers an insider's look at another of the City of Lights's enduring institutions in Crazy Horse. Wiseman documents the club's famous stage show as a new choreographer sets out to give the performances a more sensual and up-to-date look; he also observes the dancers as they rehearse their routines, wait backstage, and observe their own personal downtime rituals. Crazy Horse was an official selection at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
