Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

This slickly produced film explores a bit of the life and a lot about the romantic adventures of an acclaimed Chinese writer, Yu Da Fu. In a curious quirk of filmmaking, the movie provides almost no information about the writer or his works, and instead concentrates on his several encounters with a Japanese woman over the course of his short life. While studying in Japan in the 1920s, the future writer (Sun Min) meets a lovely woman named Tumeido (Cheng Xi) and falls in love with her. However, he dutifully returns to China and an arranged marriage. He soon becomes a well-known writer, and is in Singapore when the Japanese take it over. He has already made his opposition to Japanese activities in China very well known, so he is soon in hot water with the occupation. His troubles grow more serious, however, when he discovers that the mistress of the Japanese commanding officer is none other than his beloved Tumeido.
