Synopsis by Nathan Southern

As screened on the Military Channel, the documentary series Combat Zone pulls viewers "inside" of noted armed conflicts, military missions and wartime turning points from the late 20th and 21st century. Each episode hones in on one such event, with everything shot through the soldiers' eyes. In each case, dramatic reenactments (featuring professional actors) are used to transport audiences back to the place and time in question. The episode entitled "Battle of Najaf (Iraq, 2004)" travels to the Islamic holy site in Iraq known as the Imam Ali Shrine; though coalition forces from Iraq and the United States were carefully instructed to keep their distance, it became necessary to invalidate those orders when insurgents claimed the shrine as a base of operations. This, in turn, forced the U.S. Marines to engage in bloody hand-to-hand combat with the fighters positioned in the ensconcing countryside.
