Civilisation, Vol. XII: The Fallacies of Hope is one of a series of celebrated PBS programs presenting the development of Western civilization. This episode examines the somewhat gloomy period of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. During this time, France was under the rule of Napoleon. The program reviews the works of some of the best-known French artists including Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Gauguin. The program also covers the work of Beethoven, Lord Byron, Delacroix, and Rodin, who produced some of their best work during Napoleon's rule.
