Synopsis by Mark Deming

In 1912, Marion Mahony, one of the world's first female architects, and Walter Burley Griffin, her husband and business partner (who, like Marion, studied under Frank Lloyd Wright), were chosen to perform the daunting task of redesigning Canberra, the capital city of Australia. Mahony and Griffin's design was so well received that they soon were given a new commission to design another city, a harbor town near Sydney named Castlecrag. City of Dreams is a documentary that examines Mahony and Griffin's lives and careers, emphasizing the innovative qualities of their work and Mahony's status as a trail blazer for the role of women in architecture. Produced in part by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, City of Dreams was screened at the 2000 Melbourne Film Festival.
