First shown on July 8, 1914, Chicago Herald Movies was an experimental "up-to-the-minute" newsreel service. The publishers of the Chicago Herald arranged to have a cameraman positioned at all the major events of the day. The film was then swiftly developed and projected onscreen a scant few hours after the event took place. The first edition of Chicago Herald Movies featured a yachting race, a dirigible excursion, a South Shore horse show, a newborn baby zebra at the Lincoln Park zoo, and the unveiling of a monument. Supervising this ambitious undertaking was Herald staff photographer Harold P. Brown. Chicago Herald Movies was produced in cooperation with Harmsworth Films, a London-based newsreel concern.
