Synopsis by Hal Erickson
The title of the Russian Cherez Sto Let V Mae translated to May, Hundred Years After. This comparatively little-known historical film chronicles the life and death of Russian war hero Viktor Kingisepp. Juri Kurkov plays Kingisepp, who was killed in Estonia in the waning days of World War I. Avoiding cliched battle scenes, the film zeroes in on the human tragedy of total warfare. Like most foreign films with a supposedly narrow appeal, Cherez Sto Let V Mae was little seen outside of the big-city art house circuit, which is a shame.
