Synopsis

"Between Brecht and Beckett" (Part 5) explores the work and legacies of these titans, who explored, says host Richard Eyre, "the landscape of society [Brecht] and the landscape of the soul [Beckett]." The hour also examines the works of British and American playwrights who came in their wake, from Edward Albee, Sam Shepard and August Wilson to David Hare, Tom Stoppard and Harold Pinter. "It was under Pinter's sway," says Eyre, "that Beckett's dramatic prose became the lingua franca of the modern theater."
