Synopsis by Alice Day

The peaceful manatee, also known as a sea cow, spends much of its time eating underwater vegetation. They can reach weights up to 3,500 pounds, and are generally not hunted by predators of the sea, such as sharks. However, as Challenge of the Seas, Vol. 24: The Last Manatees shows, their populations are decreasing in large part due to boaters. Manatee lungs are located on their backs, and when the animals come in contact with boat propellers, the damage can be lethal. Hunting of manatees is seldom encountered in the U.S., but in other parts of the world manatees are regarded as a food source.
