Synopsis by Sally Barber

The Camera: Early Photography and Moving Pictures series tracks the development of photography as an art form. Volumes one through seven examine the evolution of the tool, while volumes eight through ten focus on the technological contributions leading to modern filmmaking. This volume features two segments, "Truth & Beauty" and "The End of Art." The companion tapes examine the complex philosophical issues surrounding the transition of life before and after the invention of the camera, and explore the profound connections between painting and photography. The documentary films look at the many social implications surrounding the emerging medium.
