Synopsis by Alice Day
The opportunity to have gainful employment is not always available to those with disabilities, despite the fact that they are perfectly capable of holding a regular job. Because of long-held beliefs on the part of employers that disabled people can only handle the lowly tasks, such as janitorial work, the corporate world has been slow to hire the disabled. When job openings are few, some potential workers must depend on welfare or charitable organizations in order to survive. In other parts of the world, such as the Philippines, Canada, and Jamaica, disabled people are in leadership positions in their own businesses.
