Synopsis by Janiss Garza

Marion Davies' third film was Burden of Proof, an updated version of Victorien Sardou's oft-filmed novel and play Diplomacy. Elaine Brooks (Davies) marries Robert Ames, a junior member of the Department of Justice (John Merkyl). Mrs. Durand, a spy (Eloise Clement) uses underhanded means to steal important papers from Ames, which she gives to her superior, Dr. Kemp (Fred Hearn). Although she is innocent, Elaine becomes implicated in this plot, and it takes George Blair (L. Rogers Lytton), one of the Department of Justice heads, to uncover the guilty parties and save the Ames's marriage. Eventually Mrs. Durand confesses, the bad guys are caught, and Ames asks Elaine for her forgiveness. Although Marion Davies later became an accomplished actress, at this point she wasn't quite there yet and it shows in her performance.
