Synopsis by Elizabeth Smith

David Cohen, an original member of the 1960s group Country Joe and the Fish, has played piano with many other notable performers and groups since that time. He's lent his talents to the Blues Project, Mick Taylor, the Luther Tucker Blues Band, Elvin Bishop, Melvin Van Peebles, Johnny Winter, and even the late Jimi Hendrix. During this first video of a three-part series, Cohen concentrates on teaching students basic aspects of music theory, 12-bar blues form, scales, intros, turnarounds, and endings. He also demonstrates how to play with shuffle and straight-time rhythms, triplets, quintuplets, and other special techniques. Though mainly designed for students interested in learning how to play the blues, this video contains many techniques that would be useful to those learning rock & roll or boogie woogie piano music.
