Synopsis by Mark Deming

While he's best known as a musician, having recorded over a hundred albums with such garage-primitive bands as Thee Milkshakes, Thee Mighty Caesars, Thee Headcoats, and the Buff Medways, Billy Childish (born William Lovejoy) has earned a reputation as an unpolished renaissance man, having created over 2,500 paintings and prints, written over 30 books of poetry, published two novels, and presented dozens of shows of his work. Jack White of the White Stripes, Beck, and Kurt Cobain are among the musicians who have cited him as an influence, and his rough, directly physical poetry and artwork has merited serious coverage in journals around the world. Billy Childish Is Dead is a documentary which offers an inside look at Childish's life and work, including extensive footage of him performing on stage as well as discussing his art, his traumatic childhood, his opinion of the larger corporate culture, and his controversial relationship with fellow artist Tracey Emin.
