Synopsis by Janiss Garza

The "Betty" of the film title is Fannie Ward. Her dying father has left her in the care of his bookish friend, orange grower John Kenwood (Jack Dean, in spectacles). He has also left her a mine, but a wicked schemer, James Fleming, wants to either cheat her of her share, or coerce her into marrying him. She has warmer feelings for John. After John's crop is destroyed by a frost that overwhelms his smudge pots, Betty decides to visit her mine, even though her partner insists it is worthless. When she gets there, the miners, who are fond of her, have planted some gold nuggets around to keep her from becoming disappointed. She finds out about the well-meant deception, but it turns out that the mine is loaded with ore anyway, and she returns to John and asks him to marry her.
