Synopsis by Mark Deming

Since she first rose to fame in 1972, Bette Midler has made a name for herself as a singer, an actress, a nightclub comic, a television host, and even an author. Midler has also managed all of this despite an often difficult life which included being the only Jewish child in her neighborhood, enduring a difficult relationship with her father, troubled romances, and some serious ups and downs in her career. Despite it all, Midler has endured as a major multi-media star, and this documentary offers an in-depth look at her life and times. Originally produced for the Arts and Entertainment cable network, Bette Midler: The Divine Bette Midler examines both the sunny and thoughtful sides of this multifaceted artist.
