Synopsis by Rob Ferrier
The mountains of Appalachia can be as isolated as Tibetan villages nestled within the Himalayas. This isolation encourages the growth of unique religious ideas. The harshness of the land itself lends a certain fire and brimstone flavor to the religious practices of the region. The music used in these services reflects this, usually a hard-driving rhythmic music designed to sustain a particular ecstatic mood. This video documents this music and the culture that produced it, speaking to musicians and clergy alike.
