Synopsis by Alice Duncan

The Battlefield educational video series offers detailed accounts of crucial battles that took place during World War II. Important historic events are chronicled, related political and military decisions that led to the battles are discussed, and events that followed the battles are examined. Three-dimensional imaging and computer-generated maps are used to illustrate advances and retreats and to convey their significance. Many historians consider the Battle of Normandy to be "freedom's finest hour" and the turning point of the 20th century. In the summer of 1944, Allied forces gained a foothold in Europe, which led to the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany. The story is told in two segments: "Prelude to the Battle" and "The Battle."
