Synopsis by Hal Erickson
In its ongoing pursuit of programs with a military theme, the History Channel served up the weekly, half-hour series Basic Training. Shot in and around Fort Jackson, SC, the series chronicled in vivid, grueling detail the 65-day training period of six Army volunteers (four men, two women). It is stated at the series' outset that only one out of every ten trainees ever graduates to full soldier status: Did the sextet depicted herein have "what it takes?" Timed to premiere just before the first anniversary of the World Trade Center tragedy, Basic Training debuted on August 4, 2002.
