During a shootout with a gang of robbers, undercover cop Tony Baretta (Robert Blake) accidentally wounds an innocent bystander. Baretta is especially guilt-ridden because his victim was only twelve years old. While giving serious consideration to quitting his job, Baretta finds that he has even more to worry about.
