Synopsis by Hans J. Wollstein

Based on the poem by John Greenleaf Whittier, this five-reel Civil War melodrama starred the later controversial Mary Miles Minter. Minter played the title-role, a Yankee-hating Southern belle who nevertheless falls in love with a Union captain. The girl's affection is so great that she takes a bullet meant for her already dying lover. The film co-starred the husband-and-wife team of Guy Coombs (as the Yankee captain) and Anna Q. Nilsson and was a major success for Minter's new studio, Metro. Minter later switched to Paramount with a great deal of accompanying hoopla, but her career ended after her name surfaced in the notorious 1922 William Desmond Taylor murder case. Barbara Frietchie was remade in 1924 starring Florence Vidor.
