Synopsis by Sandra Brennan

This comical satire skewers the Hungarian tendency to want to blame others for things they do themselves. The story centers on an unemployed intellectual who saves a person from suicide and receives no thanks for his efforts. Reflecting upon the incident, the intellectual decides that there is money to be made by hiring himself out as "Dr. Scapegoat." His plan is to hire himself to those needing someone to blame. His first patron is a businessman who has lost a shipload of automobiles and needs a way to cover his tracks until he can find enough money to cover the loss. Dr. Scapegoat then agrees to help an impotent husband spice up his love life by seducing the man's wife so that he can burst in at the crucial moment and catch them. Unfortunately, Dr. Scapegoat messes up when he inadvertently beds the babysitter instead. Soon after the ensuing fights and chaos with that situation subsides, the government arrests Scapegoat for his involvement with businessman. While serving time for embezzlement, Scapegoat meets the enigmatic Basiliscus who tries in vain to help him get back on his feet.
