Synopsis by Alice Day

Historically, a woman who wanted to terminate a pregnancy had few options. Illegal abortions were performed by a wide range of practitioners, and the woman had to be wary of questionable individuals who were quick to take advantage of the situation. With unscrupulous abortionists, the health of the woman was not necessarily an issue. Back Alley Detroit looks at reputable groups, such as the Jane Collective, that could be depended upon for safe procedures, despite a constant threat of exposure and arrest. This program won a Director's Citation at the Black Maria Film Festival in 1993.
