Synopsis by Mark Deming

A small town's salvation literally wanders in one day, only to bring more trouble in its wake in this comedy-drama from India. The village of Mallayapuram has fallen victim to a drought, and a three-year stretch without rain has brought the town to the edge of ruin. The village used to stage an Azhagarsamy festival every year in honor of the god Azhagar, and some feel abandoning the practice might be the reason for the lack of rain, so the local leaders put their efforts towards launching a new Azhagarsamy celebration. The organizers discover to their alarm that the wooden horse used as a mount for the statue of the deity has disappeared, but when a real horse trots into town, they find it makes an ideal substitute. Rain comes and the village's situation improves considerably, but just when life is slowly returning to normal, a man (Appukutty) arrives in town looking for his runaway horse. Is there a way for the stranger to get back his horse without once again offending the gods? Azhagarsamyin Kutharai (aka Azhagarsamy's Horse) received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
