Liu Zhixian has made a good life for himself in Hungary since 1990. A divorced man with a nearly grown son still living in China, he feels ready to take a new wife, and make amends with his son. He travels to Beijing to meet a woman who has responded to a marriage ad he placed in Chinese newspapers, and he meets the boy, who says that he feels that his father has not only abandoned him, but has abandoned China. Liu interviews the prospective bride, but she doesn't measure up, and he is left feeling quite a bit less successful than he had imagined himself to be.
