Synopsis

Part 1 of a four-part look at weapons of mass destruction and those who would use them focuses on chemical and biological warfare, which began in earnest in World War I, when Germans used toxic gases on the Allies, who retaliated. One victim: Cpl. Adolf Hitler, who refrained from using them in World War II---in combat, at least. Meanwhile, Japanese "researchers" were conducting grisly biological experiments on captured Chinese troops. Their efforts and those of others, including the Soviets, paid off only too well, as host Walter Cronkite chillingly explains.
