Synopsis by Mark Deming

Jackson Pollock triggered off a formal innovation in modern art when he began laying his canvases on the floor and splattering, dripping, and pouring paint on them, creating active and vital abstract images that reflected a style and personality unique among his contemporaries. Initially controversial, Pollock in time was recognized as one of the key figures of the abstract impressionist movement, and one of the leading lights of 20th century American painting. Artists of the 20th Century: Jackson Pollack is a documentary which explores the life and work of an American original, from his early studies with Thomas Hart Benton to his later struggles to revamp his style and keep his drinking in check.
