Synopsis by Elizabeth Smith

The art of Haiti is continuing to evolve in a variety of new and exciting directions. This video takes a look at the work produced by such talented artists as Hector Hyppolite and Riguad Benoit. Viewers will learn how the personal lifestyles and beliefs of the artists directly affect their work. Hyppolite was a voodoo priest who brought a deep, intuitive feel to many of his creations. Men such as Benoit and Philome Obin were among the early group of Haitian artists who came to their work without formal training from many different walks of life. Their tendency to feature subjects common to everyday life helped increase their popularity among lay people and art critics.
