Synopsis by Elizabeth Smith
This program explains how "art nouveau" developed toward the end of the 19th century when artists were protesting different aspects of the recently industrialized society. A number of the featured objects were previously displayed together in exhibits held at London's Victoria and Albert Museum and another one entitled "Art Nouveau 1890-1914" held at Washington D.C.'s National Gallery of Art. Various artistic influences are depicted, including Japanese and Islamic designs. Fans of this creative period will recognize work by such talented artists as Beardsley, Tiffany, Lalique, and Hoffmann.
