Synopsis by Sean Hurley

In The Shifting Paradigm, the fifth tape in the Art Meets Science and Spirituality series, the speakers focus on the questions of ecological sustainability, the fear of change, and new perceptions of reality that reveal a world more connected than might be immediately apparent. Performance artist Marina Abromovic discusses her attempts to transcend the bounds of the material world through perception-altering performance art inspired by her investigation into ancient cultures and the dance of nature. Footage of some of her work is included in the tape. Physicist (%Fritjof Capra) discusses the welcomed erosion of the mechanistic worldviews of Newton and Descartes and the necessity of understanding the interconnected nature of life. Illustrating this point is religious scholar Raimon Panikkar, who speaks from the Catalan Mountains in Spain about the connections between science, spirituality, art, and economics. Panikkar points out that as yet there is no tool for understanding understanding, and this fact leaves mankind adrift in a morass of unanswered questions. As with the rest of this series, these interviews are rich in material to stimulate the mind seeking to come to terms with a rapidly changing world.
