This PBS documentary is episode one of a four-part series which examines the visual arts in contemporary America by interviewing some of the country's foremost artists and showcasing their work. This volume examines the function of place in the life of the artist. Environments provide refuge and inspiration from the sea-swept hills of San Francisco to the inner cityscapes of Philadelphia. Artists Laurie Anderson,Richard Serra, Pepon Osario, Sally Mann, Margaret Kilgatten, and Barry McGee discuss how their sense of place influences their art, and provide the viewer with examples of their work to illustrate the point.
