Synopsis by Sally Barber

The Arabs is a ten-part series created to provide an understanding of the ongoing conflicts within the Arab world by offering an honest look at the history, culture, and society influencing Arab life past and present. Arabs speak for themselves to portray a vivid picture and present keen insight into the fabric of their people. Part five, The Arabs: New Knowledge for Old, examines the transformation of Kuwait into a thriving technological center for the Arab countries. Located between Iraq and Saudi Arabia along the Persian Gulf, Kuwait's population is only slightly more than two million. Historically a fishing town where traders and pearl divers eked out a living, its rich supply of oil changed its fate in the modern world. Now, a wealthy city-state, it draws scholars and scientists for its sophisticated opportunities and technological advancement. Other programs in the series are The Arabs: The Making of the Arabs, The Arabs: The City Victorious?, The Arabs: The Power of the Word, The Arabs: Between Two Worlds, The Arabs: Ways of Faith, The Arabs: The Shadow of the West, The Arabs: Building a Nation, The Arabs: Family Ties, and The Arabs: The Arabs Now.
