Synopsis by Brian J. Dillard

As Angel (David Boreanaz) suffers a mysterious malady that leaves him bedridden and hallucinating, Eve (Sarah Thompson) and Lindsey (Christian Kane) continue their mysterious plans. These include passing Lindsey off to Spike (James Marsters) as Doyle, the half-demon sidekick who provided Angel with his original link to the Powers That Be (see "City of"). Believing Lindsey's line, Spike reluctantly agrees to become what Angel once was -- a champion who helps the helpless with assistance from "Doyle." Meanwhile, back at headquarters, Angel's fever dream threatens to kill him. Originally broadcast January 21, 2004, on the WB network, "Soul Purpose" marked season 5, episode 10 of the supernatural soap opera. Star David Boreanaz stepped up to the plate as director of this episode, but he didn't get the chance to direct former Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar. Although Buffy appears in one of Angel's dream sequences, it's only the back of another actress' head. Snippets of Gellar's voice, however, were plucked from an old Buffy episode and used in the sequence.
