Synopsis by Brian J. Dillard

When zapped by the contents of a mysterious package that shows up at Wolfram & Hart, Spike (James Marsters) finds himself returned to the physical plane. Although he's overjoyed to be solid again, Spike's bubble bursts when the gang learns that the existence of two vampires with souls has created a mystical disturbance. A seemingly helpful Eve (Sarah Thompson) tells Spike and Angel (David Boreanaz) that one of them must fulfill the Shanshu prophesy by becoming human; to do so, he must drink from an object known as the Cup of Perpetual Torment. Angel -- not used to the idea that there's another candidate for the prophecy -- soon finds himself battling his old rival for a sip from the cup. But the surprise reappearance of a long-lost character gives lie to the idea that Eve means either vampire much good. Originally broadcast November 19, 2003, on the WB network, "Destiny" marked season 5, episode 8 of the supernatural soap opera. As the main plot of this episode chronicles the current state of Spike and Angel's rivalry, flashbacks depict its origins over a century earlier when the pair were cutting a bloody path through Europe with Darla (Julie Benz) and Drusilla (Juliet Landau).
