Synopsis by Alice Day

This series of 21 programs examines the lives of ancient tribal groups, looking at their unique qualities and contributions to civilization. Dramatizations help bring the facts to life, and on-site filming gives the viewer a sense of the environment in which the tribes existed. In Ancient Tribes: Spartans, military might was all-important, and efforts to create a warrior society pervaded their culture. There was little attention given to the higher ideals of Greek society, and the state decided whether an infant would be allowed to live or die, based on its strength at birth.
