Synopsis by Sarah Ing

Before the invasion of the white man, the West was a grand, varied village consisting of many tribes and cultures. Ancient America travels back in time to explore the lifestyles of Native Americans in Ancient America: Nomads of the West. Deserts and valleys were the home to a diverse and rich heritage before Europeans claimed the land. The nomads supported a broad network of intertribal relations. Plains Indians had a distinct form of communication using smoke signals. Sign language was also an effective tool for trading. Hunting and gathering practices, including navigating by the stars, are also recreated for this one-hour documentary. Wes Studi hosts this look at the lost civilizations of the West.
