Synopsis by Mark Deming
Acclaimed blues guitarist Roy Book Binder shows novice players the techniques behind open tunings and slide (or "bottleneck") guitar in this instructional video. In Introduction to Open Tunings and Slide Guitar, Book Binder demonstrates the traditional open D "Vestapol" tuning (in which the strings are tuned to form a D chord without fretting the fingerboard), as well as the open G "Spanish" tuning, and then demonstrates how these tunings are used to play slide licks in a number of classic blues tunes. Book Binder also demonstrates how open tunings and bottleneck techniques can be used in both lead and supporting guitar lines.
