Synopsis by Elizabeth Smith

If you enjoy visiting or reading about the mansions of the wealthy, you'll be captivated by this video. It presents information about many of the estates built during what some refer to as America's "Gilded Age." This time period spanned the years from the late 1900s through the earliest years of the 20th century. The featured estates include "The Breakers," home to Cornelius and Alice Vanderbilt; Whitehall, the home of Henry M. Flagler, who is often called the "father of Florida"; and Lyndhurst, the mansion built by John Jay Gould. George Vanderbilt's home known as Biltmore is also shown. You'll be provided with both cultural and biographical information that will help you gain some understanding as to why these people felt compelled to spend so much on these luxurious estates. You will also learn a bit about why various architectural styles were chosen.
