Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) is ranked today as one of the most prominent American realist painters. Never popular in his own lifetime, Eakins had a profound influence, both as a painter and as a teacher, on the course of American naturalism. Continuously at odds with the art establishment of his day, Eakins was an individual whose work could not be pigeonholed: He was too conservative for the modernists and too radical for the traditionalists.
