Synopsis by Rob Ferrier

This video examines the early days of American involvement in Southeast Asia as they moved in to fill the gap the French had left. The selection and backing of President Ngo Dinh Diem is investigated, as well as the coup led by his own generals that left Saigon in chaos and the U.S. with little choice but further involvement. Broad in scope and responsible in detail, this video makes good use of the huge amount of archival film available on the war. Its serious tone and responsible history makes this episode entirely appropriate for use in the college classroom.
