Synopsis by Elizabeth Smith

Amalia Rodrigues, known to many of her fans as the "Queen of Fado," celebrated her 50th anniversary as a performer by going out on a world tour that ended with this live concert in New York City. "Fado" is described by some as a form of "the blues" due to its recurrent themes of longing and sadness. Rodrigues' vocal abilities have been compared to such diverse singers as Maria Callas and Billie Holiday. Her Portuguese roots are apparent as she sings in her native language, as well as in Spanish, English, and Italian. Though Rodrigues sings a number of light and lively songs, the majority of them sound more like the soulful and melancholy tune "Primavera."
