Synopsis by Sarah Ing

Its motto "Always ready" is a testament to the Coast Guard's mobility. Since it was founded in 1789, the group has been dedicated to patrolling the American borders and the high-speed interception of wrong-doers. In the beginning, that was mainly smugglers. But now, the sailors take on much more. Always Ready: United States Coast Guard Story documents the many duties of this branch of the Armed Forces. From establishing outposts in Alaska to rescuing soldiers in Normandy, the group has seen its share of action. The Coast Guard felled German submarines and helped out at Iwo Jima. Closer to home, the enlisted men and women often save Cuban refugees determined to make it to American shores. With this presentation, viewers can explore the varied and detailed history of an often overlooked association.
