Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka
The focus of this well-wrought drama by Serif Goren, filmed in 1980, is the plight of the impoverished immigrant, jinxed with economic hardships that are difficult to overcome because of cultural and language barriers, and routinely facing widespread discrimination. As shown in the opening scenes, Mahmut (Rahmi Saltruk) marries Guldane (Hulya Kocyigit) in their village in Turkey, and then the two leave for West Germany, where Guldane has a resident visa. Conditions in West Berlin in the Turkish immigrant quarter are unblinkingly detailed, providing a backdrop for the young couple's struggle to make ends meet. Mahmut has a hard time finding a job, and although Guldane is working, she soon becomes pregnant and just cannot face up to having an abortion. That means she will lose her job, and they may have nothing to live on. In the meantime, Mahmut has found an attractive woman and is out chasing after her. All told, the future seems bleak for both of them, especially Guldane.
