Synopsis by Alice Day
One of the more powerful influences on the development of Africa was exerted by the European missionary. In the fifth of the series Africa: The Story of a Continent, this influence is discussed by host Basil Davidson as being both good and bad. True, the missionaries brought education to young Africans, allowing them to see a world previously unknown to them. But the missionaries looked down upon Africans and were unable to convert many to their beliefs. Colonization of the continent is examined in detail from the natives' perspective.
