Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

This uneven drama by Lithuanian director V. Zalakevicius is set in 1936 and focuses on the ambitions of Adam, an ordinary man caught up in the politics of his time and place. Adam and his girlfriend are like a lot of other common people in the urban and rural areas -- they either have lost work or are worrying about losing it. Compounding fears over growing unemployment is the fact that the police are aggressively chasing down communist sympathizers who happen to be the leading fighters against a dawning Nazi menace. So Adam and many others like him, sacrifice and save enough money to buy a ticket from the Alfa travel agency to leave for Buenos Aires ASAP. Adam and his girlfriend get to know the manager of the agency quite well, especially his girlfriend. But when the manager makes off with all the money he has collected from marks like Adam -- and leaves with the girlfriend for Nazi Germany -- Adam is shaken out of his dreams and forced to look at the real world that is changing around him.
