Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
In this surprising Spanish film, a group of young adolescents combine their resources to outwit their elders and enable one of their number to undergo pregnancy and childbirth without ever coming to the attention of an adult. Paloma and Arturo are 13 and 15, respectively. They meet for the first time in front of the Prado, and soon fall in love. Despite restrictive family circumstances, their friends arrange for them to have time together. Paloma then becomes pregnant as a result of a skiing trip. At first, the two young lovers plan to escape to India, where even at their ages they could be married. This does not work out, and instead Arturo and all their friends study pregnancy and childbirth so as to arrange for Paloma to give birth clandestinely. Because her single father is a traveling salesman, and she lives with an oblivious grandmother, this scheme is not altogether impossible.
