Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

Director Shukhrat Abbasov explores the life and achievements of the great Islamic scholar Abu Raihan al-Biruni in this informative costume drama. Al-Biruni was born in 973 AD in the town of Kheva in present-day Uzbekistan. His brilliant scholarship came to the attention of Sultan Ghaznawi, the ruler who conquered the region, and while he was still young, al-Biruni traveled with the sultan through India. He translated Sanskrit texts into Arabic, recorded the history and culture of India, and developed the fields of astronomy and mathematics, the ancient history of nations, geography, and medicine -- to name a few. He resolved several scientific questions and is still considered to be one of the outstanding thinkers in world history. His achievements are justifiably lauded in this docudrama that also brings up the difficulties he faced with the "establishment" of his day.
