This wasn't the first time Earle Williams played a French society crook -- he was also the title character in 1917's Arsene Lupin. Given this, and the capable James Young as director, it's a surprise that this mystery was so crudely made. Picard, a gentleman crook (Williams) is not such a bad guy -- he won the Croix de Guerre during the recently-ended World War. But when he returns home, he goes back to his illicit activities. With the unwitting help of Madame Deprenay (Katherine Adams), he is able to escape from the prefect of police. When she realizes that he's living on the wrong side of the law she turns away from him, but he wins her over to his side when he proves that her suitor, Leon Voliere (Harry Van Meter), is a swindler. Picard poses as a member of Scotland Yard and helps the prefect uncover the schemes of Voliere. By the time the prefect figures out the real identity of the man from Scotland Yard, Picard has left Paris with Madame Deprenay by his side.
