Compelled to spend Christmas with his estranged family after years of avoiding them, Boyd Mitchler (Joel McHale) arrives at his eccentric parents' (Robin Williams and Candice Bergman) home and finds his worst fears coming true when he realizes he has left his son's gifts at home, and sets out on a frantic road trip with his father to get the presents under the tree before Christmas morning.
